Places to Visit

Beachcomber's Mauritius is not only a beach destination with the most beautiful coastline, gardens and unspoilt views, but it also enables the visitor to discover the true nature of the island with all its cultural and traditional facets.

L'AVENTURE DU SUCRE

Visit this authentic old sugar cane factory completely restored and discover the fascinating world of sugar. The exhibits take you back in time to let you understand the extent to which the history of Mauritius is so strongly linked to the sugar industry.

CASELA BIRD PARK

More than 2 500 birds, representing 140 species, inhabit this park. Among the specimens from five continents, the Mauritian Pink Pigeon is one of the rarest birds in the world.

PAMPLEMOUSSES GARDENS

Famous for its huge collection of indigenous and exotic plants, particularly the Talipot Palm, which blooms once in its 60-year lifetime.

LE DOMAINE LES PAILLES

A theme park depicting life in historical Mauritius. Ride in a horse-drawn carriage or on a vintage train to the many exhibits.  Explore the nature park spread over 3 000 hectares, or trek into the mountains in a Landrover to see deer and rare birdlife. Enjoy lunch at one of four restaurants specialising in different cuisines.

PORT LOUIS

The bustling capital is steeped in history, reflecting the character of its cosmopolitan population. The market is a veritable treasure trove, selling anything from clothing to exotic spices, while the Caudan Waterfront is the place to buy designer items from upmarket boutiques.

CHAMAREL

Known for its undulating, coloured earth in shades of green, blue, red and yellow. The nearby waterfall plunges into a steep gorge covered in natural vegetation.

MAHEBOURG

It is also one of the main fishing centres. Shop for bargains at the many quaint stores and in the market.

GRAND BASSIN

One of the island’s many natural lakes resting in a volcanic crater. It is considered a place of worship for the Hindu population of Mauritius.

SHOPPING

Shopping in Mauritius takes on a new dimension since the country was declared a Duty Free destination. Luxury goods, designer clothing, cameras and electronics are among items which will attract shoppers looking for bargains at duty free prices.

  • The Grand Bazaar in Grand Bay – Take a walk from the hub of the village to Grand Bay Bazaar where row-upon-row of stalls sell shirts and other garments both formal and casual, beautiful table linen, handicrafts and anything else you could imagine at prices less than you ever dreamed possible.
  • Floreal Square – This shopping centre includes a Textile Museum and a Café. Twelve factory and duty free shops tempt you to a choice of adult and children's wear, silk, home wares, jewellery, handmade carpets and fine food.
  • The Mauritius Glass Gallery – In the heart of the island, at Pont Fer Phoenix, is the Glass Gallery where skilled craftsmen, dedicated to the preservation of the environment, bring recycled glass back to life using traditional techniques.
  • Caudan Waterfront, a modern precinct not only known for its designer shops and duty free jewellery but also for its cosmopolitan craft market, covering two floors of spices, souvenirs, basketry and craftsmen at work.
  • Gallerie des Iles in Curepipe

TOUCH THE WILD

Tear yourself away from the beach to explore Mauritius. Get in touch with nature and discover the secrets of the deep ravines and towering volcanic peaks.

  • Sport and Nature – Guests at Shandrani have it on their doorstep but guests at other hotels can book to join the tour at Eau Bleue Waterfalls for abseiling, mountain bike riding and kayaking. A challenging day out.
  • Catamaran Cruises - Let the seafaring spirit loose and take a day cruise on a ‘big cat' to the islands off the north of Mauritius, east to Ile aux Cerfs or west from Rivière Noire to Ile aux Bénitiers
  • Quad Biking – An exciting attraction in Mauritius is quad biking in the lush hilltop greenery Valriche on the south west of the island. A fleet of smart two-seater quad bikes is available for visitors who don hard hats and whiz through the lush vegetation, over rivers and through streams at an exhilarating pace. Excursions are subject to a minimum number of participants.

PARC AVENTURE

Definitely for the more agile this is an expedition through a natural forested area where you can meander along shady paths, cross foot bridges high above the trees and enjoy the spectacle while testing your adventurous abilities.

VALLEY OF FERNEY

A unique experience illustrating the history and wildlife in the region, making the area a classic example of ecotourism and responsible conservation management of the endangered fauna and flora.
